Using NYC Open Data provides opportunities for data scientists to make real-life impacts. Students taking Introduction to Data Science (STAT3255/5255) in Spring 2022 at UConn have studied two NYC open datasets closely: Motor Vehicle Collisions and Department of Buildings (DOB) Job Application Filings. For each dataset, two groups of students will present their works, one on visualization and the other on analytics. Students will use the fresh data science skills they learned since the beginning of the Spring 2022 semester. Stories will be told based on the discoveries, and the code will be made publicly available on GitHub as part of the open-source class notes.

The presentations are oriented to the general public with no technical pre-requisites. The session demonstrates the usage of real-life open data projects in college data science education.
