Recommending Schools using NYC Open Data on School Quality
Mar 11 at 10:00 am - 10:30 am
As a parent of a child in the application process for Kindergarten admissions in New York City, I found myself researching school quality surveys to evaluate and compare schools in order to rank school choices. Inspired by the vast amount of school quality data on NYC Open Data, I developed a recommendation system using machine learning models to select schools.
The data tool starts with the data acquisition from NYC Open Data using the Open Data API, then proceeds to data processing to create the relevant features for the model. Using collaborative filtering, with individual schools and individual attributes, and the application of unsupervised machine learning models, I identify schools which are similar to each other and can be recommended potentially to applicants in the school admissions process. I will also discuss some potential drawbacks to this approach to school ranking recommendation and how other sources of information should support applicants’ school ranking decisions.
