Towards SimCity for NYC: Integrating 20+ NYC Open Data Sets into Apps at WeGov.NYC

Mar 8 at 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Virtual Event Virtual Event

NYC produces lots of great open data but it’s hard for people to understand how various datasets connect to each other to get a broader perspective on what’s actually going on in NYC government.

The WeGovNYC Databook project normalizes NYC Open Data datasets, releases those normalized datasets back to the public, and then builds apps with that data.

We’ve current integrated over two dozen datasets together to create four different app/experiences:

  • Organizations: see the most comprehensive open data-driven profiles of all city agencies
  • Capital Projects: see profiles of each project with location, budget and timeline information
  • Districts: see capital projects, requests, facilities and council funding by city council district, community district and neighborhood (NTA)
  • Titles: see how civil service titles, job positions, salaries, employees and job listings, demographics and more connect to give your a view of the city workforce

These experiences are first steps towards a more ambitious goal to deliver New Yorkers a SimCity-style experience for interacting with NYC Open Data so that data can be used effectively for civic engagement and government transparency purposes.

The session agenda:

  • Our (brief) perspective on the current state of NYC Open Data
  • A call for NYC to normalize (aka standardized UIDs) within its open datasets
  • An explanation for how we at WeGov.NYC normalizes NYC Open Data and republishes it for other to use
  • A tour of our 4 Databook Apps
  • Our plan for giving New Yorkers a SimCity-style interface for NYC
  • What projects are you working on? How can we help you?
